The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea deeply regrets to announce the death, in Seoul, on 12 November 2008, of Mr. Choon-Ho Park. Mr. Park had been a Member of the Tribunal since October 1996. His term of office was due to expire in September 2014.
A register of condolences will be open for signature at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, Am Internationalen Seegerichtshof 1, Hamburg, on Friday, 14 November 2008 from 2 to 5 p.m. and on Monday, 17 November 2008 from 2 to 5 p.m.
Mr. Park, of Korean nationality, was born in Namwon, Republic of Korea, on 15 April 1930. He graduated with B.A. in political science from Seoul National University, Korea, in 1959 and received a graduate diploma in
applied linguistics from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, in 1965. He obtained his Ph.D. in international law from the University of Edinburgh in 1971.
Mr. Park was a research associate at Harvard Law School from 1972 to 1978 and at East-West Centre, Hawaii, from 1978 to 1982. He returned to Korea in 1982 and served as Professor of International Law at Korea University until 1995. From 1992 to 1995, he was Director of the Asiatic Research Centre, Korea University. He was Professor of International Law at Seinan Gakuin University, Faculty of Law, Japan, from 1995 to 2001 and Distinguished Professor of International Law at Korea University, Graduate School of International Studies, from 1997 to 2001.
Mr. Park represented both the Republic of Korea and the International Law Association from 1974 to 1995 at the Third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea and at the Preparatory Commission for the International Seabed Authority and for the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
Mr. Park was a member of the Institut de droit international and the Editorial Board of: Marine Policy, Ocean Development and International Law, Ocean and Shore-Line Management and The Asian Review.
Mr. Park published various articles and monographs on law of the sea, energy and Chinese law. He received a Distinguished Scholarship Award (Social Sciences) from the Academy of Social Sciences, Republic of Korea, in
1989 and was awarded a Doctor of Law (honoris causa) from the University of Edinburgh in 1998.
